How to End the Battle of the Chores with Your Kids!

“I don’t want toooooo!”

“Why do I always have to…”

“Are you going to make me do any more chores?”

If it’s not the whining and complaining, it’s just that I simply forget. As a busy homeschooling mama of 4 little boys, I get so busy working on my own tasks I don’t always think to assign tasks to my kids. I want my kids to be responsible and contribute to the work of the household.

How to End the Battle of the Chores with Your Kids!

I find that when my kids know what’s expected of them ahead of time, the complaining is greatly minimized. It makes sense. It’s a lot easier for me when doing a task if I know what is expected of me.

After the initial assembly of the Easy Peasy Chores system, planning your kids chores each day is a breeze! You don’t have to think about it, and they don’t have to wonder what Mom is going to ask them to do. They know exactly what is expected of them.  [Read more...]

The Pilgrim’s Progress (Week 8 of 13)

All Talk, No Power: Talkative

pilgrim's progressSometimes the greatest enemies of the gospel are those who look the most Christian.

We continue our study of the “bad guys” of The Pilgrim’s Progress. In this portion of the story, Christian and Faithful are approached by the character Talkative. He desires companionship and conversation on the road to the Celestial City, but Faithful soon learns Talkative is not what he appears to be.

Getting Started: Read the last portion of the fifth stage of Pilgrim’s Progress.

1. Talkative’s character

a. He is the son of Say-well from Prating (i.e. foolish chatter) Row in the City of Destruction.

b. He is seeking the Celestial City. The very first words out of his mouth are, “I am going to the same place.”

c. He is seeking Christian company. He willingly walks with them.

d. He desires to speak of things that are profitable, not worthless.  [Read more...]

Loft Folio iPad Case (Review)

loft-folio-ipad-caseWe use our iPad a lot. When we travel we have our iPad on to find cheap gas or good restaurants. Trisha uses it in the kitchen to display recipes. I use it for recording videos of our kids. The kids have fun and educational apps they like to play. For us, a good iPad case is not an option: it is a must.

Our new iPad case is the Loft Folio made by Domeo. I really like this case for several reasons:

  • It is a smart cover: when the case is closed it automatically puts the iPad to sleep. Our cheap Walmart cover didn’t do that. We’ve really enjoyed that.
  • The cutout for the rear camera doesn’t obstruct the lens. We’ve had problems with other cases, but this one fits perfectly.
  • The case has a “typing mode” that allows you to place the iPad at different angles.
  • The elastic strap keeps the case shut when I’m not using it.
  • The case also has kickstand that elevates the iPad several inches from the counter surface. This is “theater mode.” My wife says this has been ideal for using the iPad in the kitchen, allowing the screen to be closer to her eyes and moving the iPad from the countertop where potential spills happen.  [Read more...]

Natural Way to Soften your Laundry: Woolzies Dryer Balls

I was excited to be given a chance to check out Woolzies Dryer Balls. I’d heard about them. I’d read about them. Now, I’ve tried them!

As you may know, I make my own laundry detergent, which saves me oodles of money each year (and it’s super easy to make). I’ve been using white vinegar for softener in my washer – which also saves me money and is apparently much better for your septic system. Woolzies dryer balls are a great addition to my laundry routine.

What are Woolzies?

Woolzies Dryer Balls are hand-made, natural dryer balls. They are made from 100% New Zealand wool. Woolzies Dryer Balls naturally soften your clothes, reduce static, and reduce your laundry’s drying time.  [Read more...]

Storage Boxes for People Low on Space

I recently had the opportunity to check out Packaways Plastic Storage Boxes. They are a pretty unique storage solution. If you need boxes that are heavier duty than cardboard, but don’t take up as much room as plastic totes when not in use, this is the solution for you. Packaways set up easy and fold down flat just as easily.

I received both a large pink box and a medium blue box to review. I was immediately impressed with how easily they set up. No monkeying around with tape, I was able to intuitively set the boxes up by just pressing on the corners. The boxes also have wipe-away marking panels you can write on with a dry erase marker for labeling purposes. Boxes, totes, and under the bed boxes are all available on their website.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the Packaway boxes. My Packaways will be put to use storing little boys’ clothes in the basement. If you’re looking for a storage solution, it might be worth your while to check out what they have to offer. Free shipping on orders over $49 certainly sweetens the deal a bit too!

Save Money on Laundry Soap!

Laundry Soap Recipe easy cheapLaundry: it’s a vicious cycle! As soon as I think I’ve got it all done and under control, there’s another load to do. The only thing I can get excited about regarding laundry is if it can somehow be made easier or cheaper.

I haven’t been able to figure out how to get it done any quicker or easier, but I have been able to make it cheaper!

I’ve been making my own laundry soap for about three years now. I originally saw people making laundry soap on a TV program, and when I saw what went into making it I knew there was no way I was going to be standing over a stove stirring a big pot of muck. The only way I was going to make my own laundry soap is if it was cheap, easy, and it cleaned well. This laundry soap recipe fits the bill!

It’s ludicrously cheap and easy to make. I figured it costs approximately $1.62 for each batch, which comes out to around 5¢ a load. And, it only takes 3 ingredients that you can simply whiz together in your food processor.

Recipe:

  • 2 Cups of Bar Soap (I use Ivory soap, and 2 bars is just about perfect. You can also use fels naptha. I tried it, but didn’t notice any difference in the cleanliness of my clothes so I went back to Ivory since it’s cheaper)
  • 1 Cup of Borax
  • 1 Cup of Washing Soda

Directions:

Coarsely chop the soap and then put all of the ingredients in your food processor. Mix together in your processor for a couple of minutes. Throw it in a container and use 2 tablespoons for each load of laundry. Sometimes I’ll use a little more for a large load of laundry or one that is heavily soiled.

Usually I make 4 or 5 batches at a time, so I have laundry soap that will last me for several months.
