I love reading aloud to my kids. For my oldest son, it is one of the activities we have done together consistently since he was little. I’ve read many books to him over the years. But one of my favorite series to use is Christian Heroes: Then & Now from YWAM Publishing.
Aloud, I’ve read to him the biographies of great men like Hudson Taylor, Eric Liddel, William Carey, George Müller, Jim Elliot, and Jonathan Goforth. This year he started reading the books on his own. He’s read the bio of Gladys Aylward, re-read Hudson Taylor’s bio, and has recently moved on to Nate Saint.
What I Love About These Books:
Exposing my children to Christian biographies is…
1. A great way to make the costs of discipleship real to them – All these Christian heroes make great sacrifices to further the cause of the gospel. Some of them were persecuted for their faith. These book don’t romanticize suffering for the gospel.
2. A great way to make the triumph of the gospel real to them – All these Christian heroes saw great advances of the gospel and Christian ministry in their lifetime.
The books make great read-alouds, and for my 8-year-old (who is a fairly prolific reader) he has enjoyed reading them on his own. [Read more...]
