Kombucha: A Healthy Alternative to Juice and Soda

Kombuncha - A Healthy Alternative to Juice and SodaMost people are surprised to come to our home and find that we don’t drink soda (and therefore don’t have it available to guests). I had a terrible Mountain Dew habit in college, which I promptly broke once I started to learn more about natural health and move towards living a healthy lifestyle.

People are even more taken aback when they see that I still heavily dilute juice when I give it to my daughters. Most people think that juice is a healthy choice when in fact most juice is only marginally healthier than soda due to pasteurization and additives.

My older daughter actually prefers water to juice since that’s what she has primarily drank since she was very little. Just because we don’t drink soda or much juice doesn’t mean we’re stuck only drinking water. So, what is the drink of choice in our home?

The Secret Ingredient in Green Tea (Wellness Wednesday Link-Up)

The Secret Ingredient in Green TeaWelcome to another Wellness-Wednesday. This month we’re talking about cleaning up what we drink! We all know water is super good for you, but if you’re feeling your beverages are a bit bland these days, green tea is an excellent beverage to frequently consume! There are actually a number of compounds that make green tea a health beverage, but I want to introduce you to just one of these compounds that scientists haven’t known about for long.

Green tea is very high in the elusive micronutrient PQQ (or “pyrroloquinolone quinone” if you’d like the proper name). There are only a few places you can get this micronutrient in a decent quantity, and green tea is packed with it! Why is PQQ important?

  1. The research on PQQ is still pretty new, but PQQ helps develop new mitochondria in your cells. Mitochondria helps increase the energy capacity of the cells which may in turn rev up your metabolism and burn triglycerides.
  2. Because PQQ helps develop new mitochondria it results in healthier cells which translates into better health and longevity for our overall being, especially as we age.
  3. PQQ also acts a a super antioxidant because it’s more stable and efficient than other antioxidants. In fact, it’s been said that PQQ is 2,000 times more effective of an antioxidant than Vitamin C! You may have heard of other antioxidants—resveratrol and quercetin—but PQQ is being touted as superior to even these recently popular anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants are compounds that prevent oxidation (imagine that!). They’re important because they help prevent cancer, heart, and heart disease. They also help  brain and immune system function.

If you don’t like green tea, don’t worry! There are a few other places you can get a decent amount of PQQ including: egg yolk, parsley, green pepper, kiwi and papaya.

Do you enjoy green tea? Is it a regular part of your diet?

How Diet Coke Gambles with Your Health: Kicking my Habit

About 10 years ago, I had a roommate who had an allergy to refined sugar. This didn’t really affect my snacking-in-the-room habits too much, given that her allergy wasn’t so severe that I couldn’t have chocolate in the room or something—but it did introduce me to a wondrous substance. Something she kept on hand at all times. Something that she drank morning, noon and night whenever she needed a little extra energy to get through the day. This delicious, fizzy, miraculous beverage was called “Diet Coke.”

The Diet Coke Coke Addiction Sets In

I didn’t even like the taste at first. The first time she offered me one when I was sleepily trying to work on a paper, I thought that it tasted fake. Like chemicals. But it really did help me wake up, and there was a ready supply of it. I also happened to be dieting at the time (something I did pretty frequently). I found myself having one every few days. Then every day. Then several a day. I grew accustomed to the taste, and then, after awhile, I craved it. [Read more...]

4 Secrets Every Person with a Corn Allergy Should Know

4 Secrets every person with a corn allergy should knowCorn is insidious. No really, it is. Did you know it’s in yogurt? Deli meat? Bacon? Sausage? Potato chips? Toothpaste? Juice? Salt? Yes, I’m now convinced that virtually anything that is not in a whole food form has added corn. Where does that leave someone who has tested positive for a corn food allergy? Oy!

Little did I know just how difficult it would be when 3 out of 4 of us who were tested for food allergies would test positive for a corn allergy (I was the lucky one with no corn allergy). People think dairy is hard…gluten…but take it from me, someone who has cut all of those, corn is by far the most difficult. [Read more...]

Shortcuts to Healthy, Easy Meals for Your Family

chicken recipeNo doubt, planning healthy meals for your family, day in and day out, can be a challenge. Every mama knows it’s always nice to have a few quick and easy options up your sleeve!

That is why I was so happy to see several of the cookbooks that are in the Ultimate Homemakers eBook Bundle that is selling right now (for just a couple more days).

I had the opportunity to try recipes out of several of the cookbooks in this bundle. I’m excited to checking out more of the books, but frankly, there are so many books in this bundle it will take me quite some time to go through them. That’s a good thing! There are, in fact, over $100 worth of cookbooks and kitchen resources in this bundle (not to mention the other 85 eBooks and $140 in bonus products).

Here are a few recipes I’ve had the opportunity to try. They were quick, easy, and healthy, and on top of that my family definitely enjoyed them!

The Best eBook Bundle Sale Ever. Seriously.

This sale is now over.

I love that card in Monopoly that says, “Bank error in your favor. Collect $100.”

When I look at this eBundle sale going on right now, it reminds me of that. It makes me think somebody didn’t do the math right on this one. How can I get more than $700 worth of stuff for $29.97?

Learn more in this short video my wife made. (Isn’t she crafty?)

We’re honored to be asked to include our Write Through the Bible curriculum in this eBundle next to so many great ebooks, curriculum, and ecourses.

As you can see, there are a ton of resources in this. Of course, I don’t plan on using all of these books, but if you plan on using even a tenth of them, you save money (not to mention all of the bonus offers that we’re totally psyched about).

You can buy the bundle right now, or get a complete list of all the stuff in the bundle.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate Cheesecake (sugar-free and gluten-free)

I think I just may have outdone myself with this recipe :) . No, really. I even got this recipe right on the very first try. That doesn’t happen very often. A peanut butter cheesecake with a brownie crust, covered in chocolate ganache… oh yes! And it’s gluten-free and sugar-free. Can you beat that?!

Peanut Butter Chocolate cheesecake with a brownie crust and chocolate ganache topping (sugar free and gluten free) Recipe @ Intoxicatedonlife.com

This cheesecake will take a bit of time, so be prepared. It’s not one of those throw-together-on-short-notice types of desserts. You’ll have to allocate a decent amount of time and make it the day before you’d like to eat it (cheesecakes really needs to sit overnight).

Are you ready? Let’s go! [Read more...]

Pamper Mom: DIY Mother’s Day Gift for Non-Craftsy Types

I love making gifts for my family, but I’m not a very craftsy type. That makes many of the DIY gifts floating around on the Internet pretty difficult. At Christmas, I was able to come up with a gift idea—I made our parents seasoning mixes (taco seasoning, chili seasoning, and ranch mix).  They turned out very tasty!

So, for Mother’s day I set out to find a great DIY gift idea.
