If I could back to when I was younger, as lame as this sounds, I would totally knock it into my younger self’s head that my health is one of the biggest gifts I have. I’d insist I take care of myself.
Now in my 30’s (not that I am old by any stretch) I do realize what a gift good health is. I had no clue as to how chronic health issues can affect ones day to day living. Even simple tasks can become complicated when you have health issues.
I had no clue that around 20% of people in the United States are diagnosed with IBS symptoms. That is a huge percentage of people dealing with not only the physical components of a painful disease but the emotional side effects of how it impacts their day to day activities.
While I have only had minor issues with my Hashimoto’s I know other people with disease like IBS, UC or ileal pouch have an even more difficult time with day to day tasks. Things many of may not think about, like taking family trips can be difficult due to having to use the rest room frequently, making travel very inconvenient.
4 Strategies for Relieving Chronic Gastrointestinal Issues
Issues with the gut are sadly, quite common. I am thankful there are ways to be able to help relieve some symptoms associated with gut related disorders.
1. Diet changes
Changes in the diet of someone who has gastro issues can make a HUGE difference! Getting rid of processed foods that cause inflammation gives the gut a chance to work properly without added stress.
Also finding out any food allergies and sensitives can greatly help your body while it is already stressed. Often times as the gut heals, you can even add these foods back.
2. Digestive enzymes
Often times when we have issues with our digestive tract, it is partly because our bodies lack what we need to digestive food properly. Adding enzymes or herbal bitters at meals can help break down the food so the body can assimilate it without aggravating your gut.
3. Drink water
Sometimes the simple is over looked. Drink enough water each day. Water helps all of your body systems flush out what is in there and keep the lymph system moving.
4. Probiotics
One of the most common products to help is probiotics. We are often lacking in good bacteria so adding a good supplement to our daily routine helps to build up the gut flora.
Not All Probiotics are Equal
Did you know that not all probiotics are the same? I found this out as I was researching and looking at different brands.
Different strains of probiotics do different things in the gut, so it is important to research them in conjunction with the symptoms and/or disease you have.
It is recommended that the adults take at least one billion cells of probiotics daily.
If you’re looking for a high quality probiotic, Bio-Kult Advanced is one of our favorite brands.
Another thing to note is, not all probiotics are gluten free. Seriously. I was shocked to find this out. This can be a huge deal for those of us with autoimmune disorders. (Fortunately, Bio-Kult is gluten-free AND non-GMO!)
Probiotics have been known to help with many gut issues by colonizing the gastrointestinal tract with good bacteria, which can reduce gas and bloating associated with IBS. (It can even help maintain remission of UC or an ileal pouch!)
Finding the right supplement for your conditions can mean the difference between continuing symptoms or relief. It takes time to find what works for your body but finding the right product is like striking gold for those with chronic health issues.
Have you used a probiotic to manage chronic health conditions? I’d love to hear how it has helped you!
