Continuing on our theme of spiritual wellness this month, I’d like to hi-lite a few of my favorite books for spiritual development and inspiration. These are three devotional books that I’ve learned from, been inspired by, and have been used in conjunction with the Word of God to convict me of sin. Of course, the Bible is the ultimate authority and there is no replacement, but I’ve learned much from the godly teachers who wrote these books.
My Utmost for His Highest
Despite the fact that this small book has been around for over 80 years, this wisdom in the book is still just as relevant now as it was when it was first written. Within it’s pages you’ll find very short devotionals – one for each day of the year. These devotionals were compiled from the lectures and devotionals that Oswald Chambers delivered between the years of 1911 and 1917.
Secure in the Everlasting Arms
I read this book shortly after my first husband died. I believe someone gave it to me, but I honestly can’t remember who. I wish I could because this book was a comfort and also helped me to keep my eyes set on God and keep the events of my life in perspective. Elizabeth Elliot, the author, is no stranger to grief so it makes sense that her words would minister to me during this difficult time of my life.
In Christ Alone
This book by the Scotsman Sinclair Ferguson is a collection of devotions calling the reader to life a Christ-centered life. Though the chapters are a mere 3-4 page pages, there is meaty doctrine throughout. The overarching themes of the book include: the incarnation, the different aspects of Christ’s work on our behalf, the ministry of the Spirit, the privileges of grace, the expression of the gospel in our lives, the faithful life. This is a book I read for the first time a couple of years ago and will be picking up again very soon.

Thank you for the recommendations! I have a grieving friend that I’m getting that book for!

I love My Utmost for His Highest. I have not seen the other two but I really like Sinclair Ferguson. I will have to look for that one for sure.

Right now the Book “Jesus Calling” by Sarah Young has been invaluable to me. I lost a job I loved and fully expected to stay in for several more years. The grief over this loss consumed me. Slowly, thru reading Sarah’s book in conjunction with daily Bible reading, I’m coming to acceptance of the loss with the bonus of having been drawn closer to my Lord. The life I lived was so active, it was hard to find time to just “be” with God. Now, I have the time and He is changing me in all sorts of ways. It’s been quite the journey and I know it’s not done yet.

That sounds like a great book. I’d never heard of it before. I can understand feeling like it’s difficult to find time to just “be” with God. As a homeschooling mom of 4 kids it’s something I often struggle with.
