Tonight’s Christmas devotional was to help the kids appreciate that God has given us the gifts of wisdom and knowledge. We homeschool our kids, so this is something we try to impress on them all the time.
For their object lesson tonight we had them open packages with notepads and pencils inside. We asked them about all the things they could do with that notepad and they listed many different learning activities. We also discussed what the boys have recently been learning about—they were excited to reiterate all of the things they’re doing currently for school. From there we started talking about the blessing of being able to learn.
We turned to Proverbs 2:1-11, a passage that celebrates the gift of wisdom. The Proverbs firmly anchor the purpose of wisdom in God and we wanted to make sure our kids understood that: wisdom isn’t merely about knowing a lot about a lot of things; it is about knowing and fearing God. The Proverbs also challenge us to search for wisdom with great diligence, so tonight served a reminder to Bradley and Cameron about the importance of learning.
Next we turned to Colossians 2:1-3 to talk about how Christ is the source and goal of all wisdom. When we seek to know Christ personally, we are getting to know the fountainhead of wisdom. We can only pursue this kind of wisdom together: as Paul says, we must be encouraged and knit together.
Cameron especially enjoyed this gift because he loves to draw. We actually had to take it out of his reach while we were doing the devotional because it was proving to be a bit of a distraction.
