Time to stock your bathroom cabinet! The season where we need a little extra immunity support starts up in October and peaks in December and January.
I’m so glad you asked! With a few simple essential oils recipes, you can make some wonderful natural products that will help keep your family healthy through the fall and winter.
This post is not intended to treat, prevent, or cure disease.
Here are the main immune-supporting essential oils we love.
- Immune Strength *
- Melaleuca
- Lemon
- Oregano
- Lavender
- Peppermint
DIY Big Bomb
- 15 drops Immune Supporting
- 15 drops Melaleuca
- 15 drops Lemon
- 10 drops Oregano
- Fractionated coconut oil
Combine the essential oils in a glass roll-on bottle. Fill the remaining space with fractionated coconut oil. Apply to bottoms of feet or along spine every hour if you need extra immune support or twice a day to keep your immune system up.
Many folks concoct a bomb in capsules and take internally. While I can’t discount their testimonies, I will say that topical use and inhalation are more often better uses of oils based on how essential oils fundamentally work. That’s what we choose to do in our family for these recipes.
DIY Children’s Bomb
The Big Bomb is quite a strong combination and dilution level with some pretty hefty oils. I personally feel more comfortable using a different recipe for my children.
- 10 drops Immune Supporting Blend (over 6) or Tea Tree*
- 10 drops Lemon
- 10 drops Lavender
- Fractionated coconut oil
Combine the essential oils in a glass roll-on bottle. Fill the remaining space with fractionated coconut oil. Adjust the amount of essential oils to coconut oil if needed. Apply to bottoms of feet or along spine every hour if you need extra immune support or twice a day to keep your immune system up.
*(Updated 9/20/15) If your Immune Supporting Blend contains oils such as eucalyptus citriodora and cinnamon bark, it may not be safe for kids 6 and under.
Diffuse Oils to Support the Immune System
Combining diffuser routines to roll-on-bombs can be a great strategy. We often diffuse the oils a few times during the day (in lieu of hourly roll on application) and then apply the roll-on formulas just before nap time or bed time. Try one or more of these oils in your diffuser (or diluted topically). Again, we generally stick to the first three for the kiddos.
- Immune Supporting Blend
- Lemon
- Lavender
- Tea Tree
- Peppermint (topically, for occasional head tension)
Advanced Protection Blend
Cleaning Diffuser Blend
- 15 drops Pine
- 15 drops Lemon
- 20 drops Lavender
Add oils to a dark colored glass bottle and shake well for a minute or two to blend. Label and store. Add 10 drops to your diffuser. Use to help clean the air and environment when someone in your home isn’t feeling well.
Surround Me In Comfort: Warming Bath Oil
- 20 drops Ginger Root
- 15 drops Palmarosa
- 15 drops Ajowan Seed
- 15 drops Pine Needles
- 10 drops Lavender
- 1 cup Jojoba
Add all ingredients to a dark colored glass container. Shake well for 2 minutes to blend. Allow to sit for 24 hours before use. Add 1-2 tablespoons to a warm/hot bath as the water is running. Soak for 20 minutes. After bath, apply Winter Defense Body Oil to body and go to bed.
Immunity Blend
- 1 teaspoon Lavender
- 1 teaspoon Eucalyptus Globulus
- 3/4 teaspoon Ravintsara
- 1/2 teaspoon Bay Leaf
Combine all ingredients in a dark colored glass bottle. Shake well for 2 minutes to blend together. Cap, label, and allow to sit for 24 hours before using. Diffuse up to 10 drops a day to help boost your immune system.

I love NAN oils! Thanks for the recipes. (Was just at the dr today for routine check and declined the flu shot that was offered …)
Jamie
Are all these recipes safe for pregnant women? And if not all which ones would be safe? Thank you! 🙂
Tauna Meyer
Hi Jamie! Here is a list of oils to be cautious about when pregnant. If the recipe doesn’t contain them, it should be fine. Personally, I am even more cautious during the first trimester (sticking to Immune Strength, lavender, and lemon) but then go to this list for the second and third. Hope that helps!

Addie
Thanks for the great recipes. What are your thoughts of Eucalyptus globulus and children? Can it be diffused near young children?
Tauna Meyer
Hi Addie!
I don’t use Eucalyptus globulus or radiata on children under 3 due to risk of spasm of the glottis. I am much more comfortable using Eucalyptus citriodora in kids, but even then I wait until they at least about 1 years old just to be sure. Eucalyptus citriodora is what is in Immune Strength.
Coreline
I have always used only young living oils and am nervous about making the switch to NAN oils. YL prides themselves in the quality of their oils, so much so, they are the only oils I have felt okay ingesting. Can you say the same for NAN oils, and have you ingested them? Also how do you think their blends compare to YL? It would be hard to give up thieves and valor for me! The price difference is definitely attractive 🙂
Tauna Meyer
Hi Coreline! I understand your hesitation. Why change what works, right? However, I am pretty confident in saying that NAN oils are as high in quality as YL, if not more so. I’ve done a lot of research on the different companies and the claims each make on purity. Yes, you can ingest NAN oils just as well as YL oils. I personally seldom find a reason to ingest rather than diffuse or apply topically, but that is regardless of the oil brand, and I know different people have different opinions/practices on that. If I were you, I’d just buy a bottle from NAN of the oil you most commonly use and try it! There is certainly no safety/purity issue compare to YL, but I would want to test it out and see if it worked as well for me before spending too much on a brand I’m not familiar with. NAN oils can also smell more “earthy” than the other companies, which they attribute to their local hands-free growing practices. But some people aren’t as partial to it. Hope that helps! 🙂 Here’s more on this if you’d like to read it: https://www.intoxicatedonlife.com/2014/03/03/skeptics-guide-essential-oils-choosing-company-k-purity-issue/

where do you diffuse oils to prevent the illness?
Tauna Meyer
If we’ve been around people who are sick or have someone in the home who is sick, I diffuse them in the main living area when everyone is awake.

SO happy I found this! Thanks for posting. My 16 month old and I have the flu now (no thanks to going to the pediatrician for a well visit and 8 kids were there and had the flu) so I’ve been using the bomb on myself. But I knew it was pretty strong to use on her. Would you suggest adding anything else for her bomb? She’s been non-stop running a temp of 102-104. The day I took her to the ER it was 105. And also when diffusing would should I use all of them together? Thank you so much!
Meghan Rickles
And that’s suppose to say “should I use them all together” not would should!
Tauna Meyer
Yes I would use them altogether in the diffuser. You can even use one or a combination of whatever you have on that children’s bomb list. Those are the oils I am most comfortable giving young children, so I’m not sure I would recommend adding anything else. Chamomile, perhaps? It would certainly at least have a calming effect. One of the main things I noticed about getting real results from oils is to USE them consistently. At first I’d just use them once or twice and not see any results. Using them at the first sign and consistently (not overusing, just not forgetting about it altogether) was a big help. Sorry for the delated response on this. Hope it finds your little one happy and well by now!

I am new to essential oils and am making my first shopping list. I have virgin coconut oil already, but do I need to purchase fractionated coconut oil? Would the regular virgin coconut oil work the same?
Thank you for this helpful article. I am learning so much at this website.

I decided enough was enough! I starting learning about essential oils and the benefits on both health and getting well sooner after sicknesses. I now don’t worry about being around my little grandchildren because they “breed” colds. I have been almost cold free for three years, and if I do catch one, it is usually a light case (or regular for most people). I love reading your recipes and things you discover!
Greg
Thanks for the recipe! Can’t wait to try it out!
