I love foaming hand soap. I like it because it’s fun. Who can resist rubbing their hands in those fun bubbles?
My kids love washing their hands when they have foaming soap — and we all know how important it is to encourage our kids with those good habits. So if always keeping a healthy supply of foaming hand soap on hand will encourage healthy habits, sign me up!
My twins can empty out half a bottle of foam soap between the two of them in one trip to the bathroom! Yikes. That can get expensive when you’re paying $3-$4 a bottle! But that brings me to another reason I love this soap. It’s super cheap when you make foaming hand soap yourself. The store bought stuff? Not so much.
DIY foaming hand soap is also ridiculously easy to make and it has no crazy weird chemicals in it. There’s just so much to love about foaming hand soap!
Cost Break Down for Foaming Soap
One trip to the supermarket will leave you scratching your head and wondering how you can make your own foaming soap for a mere 43¢. At my local store, I can usually find some for around $3.00, for the cheaper stuff.
Let me tell you a secret, the only essential ingredients in foaming hand soap are the soap and water. And it’s mostly all water. I also add a couple drops of essential oils for a natural (non-chemical) scent and for some immune-boosting properties which brings the price up a little bit, but not much.
Here’s the cost break down for my soap:
- Water: FREE
- Organic Liquid Castile Soap: 43¢/per ounce
Best Essential Oils for This Recipe
While essential oils are optional in your hand soap, I always use them. They give the soap an amazing aroma and of course I like to take advantage of the therapeutic properties too!
My favorite essential oil to use in this recipe is OnGuard because it smells great, has cleansing properties, and boosts immune function. Alternatively, you can make this immune supporting essential oil blend.
You can use nearly any essential oil in this soap — others that smell nice include citrus oils like grapefruit, wild orange, and lemon!
Let’s Make Foaming Hand Soap!
Easy Foaming Hand Soap
Ingredients
- Water
- 2 Tablespoons Organic liquid castile soap
- 7-10 drops essential oils (optional) my favorite is OnGuard
Instructions
- Take a foaming hand soap dispenser* and fill it mostly up with water. Leave about 1 inch empty at the top. This will accommodate your remaining ingredients as well as the dispenser top.
- Add the liquid castile soap and essential oils if you're using them.
- Put the cap on and gently swirl the ingredients together.You're now ready to get sudsy!
Notes
Helpful Hints for Making Foaming Hand Soap
This is truly one of the few no-fail recipes I know of, but here’s a few tips to make sure you don’t run into any frustration while making your foaming hand soap!
- If using essential oils, like I do, be sure to use unscented castile soap.
- Always add your water to the bottle first. I think we’ve all mistakenly added the soap first. It’s not the end of the world if you do, but you’ll end up with a bit of a sudsy mess when you add the water and you won’t be able to fill the bottle to the top.
- Add a half teaspoon of almond oil or jojoba oil to your foaming hand soap if you’d like an extra moisturizing soap.

I really enjoy your website–thanks for all the interesting and helpful information you post! Just wanted to add to this–I refill my soap dispensers as well but have found that with castile soap, the pump starts to get difficult after a few refills. (It gets stuck when pushed down and only comes back up if pulled up.). So I’ve started adding a small squirt or two of jojoba oil to each refill, and it not only seems to help the pump but also makes the soap feel smoother and softer.

I’ve not had trouble myself with the pump, but I wonder if it’s because I switched to using heavier duty soap dispensers (ie. not reused ones from the grocery store that were meant to be disposable). But smoother soap for soft hands is good too :). I think I’ll have to try this out next time I make my hand soap!
