We began our first night of special Christmas devotionals with the kids. It has been a lot of fun planning this.
As we stated in a previous post, each night leading up to Christmas we will be having our two older kids open packages with items inside that will serve as “object lessons” for our family devotions that night. These objects will be small tokens that are meant to remind our kids of the great gifts God has already given to us.
Last night we had the kids each open packages with their children’s Bibles inside. For my devotional I read from Romans 15:4,8-9a.
I had two main points for the kids to hear: (1) We should be thankful for God’s Word. It fills us with hope as we read great stories of faith and as we read His great and encouraging promises. (2) Jesus is the whole point of the Bible: He is the one God has promised in the Scriptures.
I felt this was an appropriate starting point for our devotions because I want our kids to see that the Bible is startingplace for knowing God. God has given us many gifts, but the gift of His inspired Word is what teaches us to see all His other gifts rightly.
The boys seemed to have fun opening their Bible’s, even though they are the same Bibles they read every day. We were a bit worried Cameron (4-year-old) might get mad that he wasn’t getting a new gift, but he was delighted as he sat and flipped through the pages of his Bible. The babies, were a bit tricky to handle during our devotions, we might put them to bed before devotions tonight!
