On the 4th day of Christmas Jesus gave to me…a candle. Yes, that was tonight’s object lesson. After praying together, the kids excitedly scurried to the tree to find the gifts labeled #4. After smelling their candles for a minute or so they insisted we light them before continuing with our devotion.
Tonight’s Christmas devotional was about the gift of a home. We first took the kids to Proverbs 24:3-4: “By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches” (ESV). We explained to them that when the Proverbs talk about a house, they are not only referring to the roof over our heads but everything and everyone that lives in our home. We talked to them about how God has blessed us with a home to feel safe and loved.
From there we talked about what wisdom is. In the Bible, wisdom isn’t just knowing what it right, it is knowing why it is right. We show if we are really wise if we love what is good and true and kind.
We then turned to Jesus words about building one’s house on the rock in Matthew 7:24-27. We talked about how Jesus defined wisdom as listening to and obeying His teachings. Jesus’ teachings are the essence of wisdom.
Our hope tonight we reminded our kids of two great truths. First, God has given us a wonderful home. And second, what establishes a home and makes it a blessing is when we strive to live wisely, when we listen to Christ and obey Him.
