I recently made this homemade blemish treatment recipe.
I haven’t struggled with blemishes for quite a while. It was definitely something that reared its ugly head when I was a teenager. Eating too much sugar—and using too much Rave hairspray (resulting in lots of ugly zits around the hairline)—did not help things.
Sometimes, I still have some zits that pop up, and I’ve found this blemish treatment works like a charm for me. I’ve talked to others who have tried it out and had great success as well.
How this Essential Oil Blemish Treatment Works
Each of the 4 ingredients in this blemish treatment mixture is there for a very specific purpose.
- Coconut Oil penetrates your skin and is absorbed quickly. It also immediately begins to reduce the inflammation from acne. Coconut oil helps clear up scars and protects open wounds from blemishes present. While you might be concerned it causes more acne because it’s an oil, I assure you it does not. In fact, it helps you avoid blemishes before it even begins due to its antimicrobial properties.*
- Lemon Essential Oil works to balance overactive sebaceous glands, helps clear blemishes, and encourages the exfoliation of dead skin cells.*
- Lavender Essential Oil is very calming and soothes the skin. It balances oil production, soothes skin irritations, and stimulates the circulation of the skin.*
- Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Essential Oil is well known for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, making it a top essential oil to help combat mild blemishes.

Equipment
- 4 oz Mason jars
Ingredients
- Coconut oil
- Lemon essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Tea Tree oil
Instructions
- Choose an airtight container—preferably a glass jar. These 4 oz Mason jars work perfectly.
- Soften ¼ cup of coconut oil for about 10-15 seconds in the microwave until it turns into a liquid form.
- Stir in 10 drops each of Lemon, Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils (do not use a metal spoon as it will react with the oils reducing the strength).
- Place your blemish treatment mixture in the refrigerator to it to set until firm.
- Use by simply dabbing a small amount on acne in the morning and evening, after washing and drying your face well.
What have you found that helps keep your skin clear?

I have had cysts in my chin for years now!!! (Almost 20!!!) I’ve tried soooooo many things. Proactive worked best but I’ve tried to go natural for a long time and found nothing else that helped. I just read a post a few months ago about cleaning with salts!! That sea salts help people’s skin sometimes!!! I bought some magnesium flakes and gave it a go!!!! I haven’t had any cysts since I’ve started!!!! Yeah!!!! I use which hazel as a toner with it and I clean my face twice a day using both!!! I am soooooooooooo happy!! I even wear organic makeup and I don’t break out! I share with everyone I can now as I know the pain of acne. Literally!!! Lol. Cysts hurt.

Great to hear you’ve had such good luck with that strategy!

Great advice. Love blending EOs with coconut! I don’t have acne but experience rosacea occasionally. I’ll definitely give these recipes a try!

Great post. I typically will put a drop of tea tree/melaluca oil in coconut oil and rub on the area with a pimple. Then spray with a lavender hydrosol after. Thanks for sharing on Let’s Get Real Link Party.

Ha! Rave hair spray! Fellow 80’s girl. My weapon of choice was Aqua Net Ultra-Super Strong!!! The 80’s were great weren’t they? Oh and btw, can’t wait to try that. Right now I’m using a rx cream. Just a spot treatment because I really don’t break out much at all anymore.. A few before my monthly visitor but that’s usually it. Ever since I switched to a vegan diet my breakouts almost diminished. I’d love something natural to try. Just have one question, you have Melaleuca Essential Oil listed above the recipe ‘card’ but then tea tree oil on the recipe ‘card’. Are they the same? I know nothing about oils (Yes I’m going to sign up for your class 🙂 Thank you so much! Visiting from Making Your Home Sing Mondays
Trisha Gilkerson
Yes, melaleuca and tea tree are one in the same 🙂 Sorry for the confusion!
Ashley
I use Melaleuca whenever I get the feeling of a zit coming on and it works great! This treatment sounds like it would be amazing too. Thanks for sharing!

Do I have to avoid sun when I use treatment?, because of Lemon essential oil. For how long do you suggest I can use it?
Trisha Gilkerson
Yes, you are correct and I should add this note to the post! Lemon essential oil does cause photosensitivity and you should avoid the sun for about 12 hours.

Hello,
If I wanted to add Geranium and Frankincense, would I keep the recipe as 10 drops each for all of the oils? Would 5 oils in one recipe be too much? TIA!
Suzanne
This looks so good! What a great natural remedy to have on hand!
Vanessa
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
