I recently created an immune support essential oil blend. To say my family struggles with nasal reactions to seasonal changes would be an understatement. It was during a particularly bad bout of reactions to the weather coupled with other seasonal issues that just would not die that sent me on a trip to our local health food store.
Learn more about my favorite essential oils in this post.
I essentially begged them for something that we could use in conjunction with our usual over the counter treatments that would bring us all some additional relief for our oh so snotty, sneezy, and headachy symptoms. The woman working there that day suggested I try a “homeopathic” sinus oil blend that contained both frankincense and myrrh.
When it comes to remedies labeled homeopathic I’m a huge skeptic, but I knew first hand how much essential oils can help with moderate ailments, so I was willing to try it.
Immune Support Essential Oil Blend Backstory
Let me tell you, this stuff works! Really well in fact. But that’s not the half of it. The more I started researching essential oils and their properties, the more I realized how much this one little bottle labeled “sinus” could actually do.
In our home we’ve used this blend to: stave off seasonal attacks, help sinus head tension, massage sore muscles, treat skin blemishes, treat restless leg syndrome, and another family member has even used it to help with her major discomfort when she had issues with ovarian function.
This little bottle is amazing! I started buying it whenever I made my usual trip to the store. But a few months ago I went to the store and was informed they were out of the sinus blend. Then the next time I went in I was informed, to my absolute horror, that they can no longer order it at all.
Rather than panic that my miracle blend of oil was no longer being manufactured I decided to dabble in “alchemy” instead. So I purchased every essential oil listed in the ingredients that I didn’t currently have in my stash in an attempt to duplicate the blend.
I started with equal amounts of essential oils diluted in sunflower seed oil and started sniffing between my leftover blend and my new blend. Real scientific, I know. The result is an oil blend recipe, however, that is extremely close to the original that works (according to my husband and others I’ve made it for) just as well.
The downside of this immune support blend is it contains some pricey oils. If you aren’t 100% convinced on the effectiveness of essential oils this blend will definitely convince you (it did my husband). There is a reason why oils like frankincense and myrrh are more expensive, the main one being they’re effective.
You could make this immune support essential oil blend without the frankincense and myrrh but you would lose some of the therapeutic properties. It’s worth a shot though, especially if you already have the other oils in your stash.

This sounds amazing! I am looking for an oil blend to replace Vicks. Nothing better than Vicks on your feet when you are sick! Well, this would be better because it’s all natural. 😉
Is this safe to use on kids? Both of mine (ages 6 and 4) have the back to school crud (cough, sniffles, congestion). *sigh*
K. M. Logan
The bottle of the blend that I purchased said it’s for children over 2 years old. It’s pretty diluted with the sunflower oil, but rosemary is a pretty potent oil so it’s best to be careful with kids.

Am happy to read about this sinus mix. I truly believe in essential oils, Frankincense has been a Godsend for me. I have spots of basal cell, and squamous skin cancer. Basal cell on my nose, and forehead. My nose is terribly ate up with basal cell. Frightened of having my face cut on more, I looked into essential oils. I have (thanks to a very close, and dear friend) been using frankincense and hawaiian sandalwood. The good size spot on my forehead is quickly disappearing, and my nose is the clearest it has been in at least 6 years. Essential oils, and homeopathic remedies worked for thousands of years. Way before modern day pharmaceuticals came about. I use Hawthorne berry for my high blood pressure, it works. I read everything I could find on it before using it.{It is a main ingredient used in almost all, heart medications. And has been shown to be beneficial to those with high blood pressure.} The last 2 sentences are almost direct quotes from WebMD. My brother suffers from congestive heart failure, when I was shopping with him almost a week ago, he could hardly breath. I asked him what was wrong, “He said, ” It’s my the congestive heart problem.” What? I never knew he had it, probably because he knew his sisters would start worrying about him. He said he had been taking Hawthorn berry, for a couple years, but had forgotten. So we stopped at a store, and he went in and bought a large bottle of Hawthorne berry, took 4 pills within 20 minutes he was breathing fine, and his face was no longer flushed. God gave us herbs, and oils for a reason. I will no longer ever doubt the strength of that.

I’m amazed at how Frankincense has been found to help [omitted], it’s definitely worth trying first before chemo or radiation. I definitely think homeopathic methods have their place in treatment. Not that someone should treat cancer without a doctor’s help, but in conjunction with their expertise. I’m so glad oils have been helping you health.
Amanda
Finding this has made me really excited because the allergy season is in full force but I am allergic to eucalyptus. Could I omit it or use another oil perhaps?
K. M. Logan
You might try lemon or just omit completely.
Katie
Great aromatherapy blend! I love it. Thanks for sharing with us at The Wise Wife. Looking forward to sharing with you next week!
Melissa
Hi – This recipe looks great – can you tell me if you use 4 teaspoons or 4 tablespoons of sunflower oil Thank you! I can’t wait to try it.
K. M. Logan
4 tsps.
Melissa T
Thank you for your response. Do you know if this would help non-allergy rhinitis?
K. M. Logan
Yes! It’s anti-inflammatory so it helps for both.
BJ
What is tsps? The abbreviations I have seen are tsp for teaspoon and tbls for tablespoon. TSPS clarifies nothing in my opinion!
K. M. Logan
Sorry I simply meant teaspoons. It would be wonderful if I could afford an editor, but alas.
Donna
In the instructions, you tell how to apply it for allergy attacks and sinus headaches. Would someone with a sinus infection, or sinusitis, use it the same way?
K. M. Logan
Yes, definitely.
Jessica Ballinger
Thanks for sharing!!! I just made a slightly tweaked version (I don’t have geranium or myrrh, so I subbed with helichrysum and a little lemon and melaleuca). Smells good! Thanks again!
Wendy
Hi all! I have everything I need to make this EXCEPT the sunflower oil. I have almond, coconut, jojoba, apricot, argan, grapeseed, rosehip & avocado Could I substitute any of these in its place and get the same results? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Trisha Gilkerson
I’m sure any of those oils would work just fine. The sunflower oil is simply the carrier oil in this recipe, and I believe any of those you mentioned should work fine!
Wendy
Thanks so much for the post and the reply Trisha! I am mixing up a batch today, can’t wait to use this natural remedy and hopefully find fast relief! I have acute, chronic sinusitis and I’m sick of being on prescription medications that only mask the problem for a short time. Unfortunately I passed this condition along to my daughters and grandchildren… so you’re not only helping me, you’re helping 3 generations!! Keep up the great work and the awesome posts!! I’m a faithful follower!!

Thanks for this! I’m going to try it! My son and husband have chronic sinus issues/infections related to a disorder they share, yay. Lol. I just wanted to share that it has been quite effective for them to add 1 drop of maleluca and 1 drop of Eucalyptus to the 8 ounce sinus saline rinse. (Saline rinses are the BOMB!). For everyday prophylaxis, we use just the 1 drop of maleluca in rinse. ALSO, frankincense 1 drop under the tongue each day (takes 3 days to learn to like the taste…) is supposed to rip apart any [omitted] cells in your body and help prevent new ones! Can’t hurt, right? 🙂
K. M. Logan
Love saline rinses!

How can anyone thank you enough for sharing such a needed recipe. I don’t have alergies but know others who could use this. As we get older we trust Dr.s less. We need to learn from each other to care for ourselves. I would like to see other recipe we could use. Keep up the good work. I had broncitis last winter for 3 weeks. I thought I would choke to death from so much mucus. The clerk at a health food store told me to take 1 capsule of juniper berries. It cut that mucus right out. Gin

Every time the seasons change I often suffer from respiratory difficulties, like sinus discomfort, and cause head tension, very uncomfortable. Fortunately when using peppermint oil my health improved dramatically. I think all essential oil contains peppermint are good for health, indeed.
Beth Wooten
Would you just wipe this across the nose and across sinus cavities? Just getting in to using oils and still learning what all to do and how. I really want to try this as I have been to the ENT and have problems from allergy irritants as she said but so far nothing is really helping.
Stephanie
I just have one question where is a good place to purchase some oils I am so interested, I do foster care and one of my babies is allergic to everything and I know this would be great for her……
Trisha Gilkerson
That depends a lot on who you ask! We have a series of posts that is dedicated to helping you figure out what to look for in essential oils. You can start with the first one here.

Quick question! Will this be effective if diffused as well?
Trisha Gilkerson
It should be!
Ashley Reed
I’ve literally fallen in love after getting my first essential oil diffuser! Been very impressed by Lavender specifically and have yet to try the other oils available! This blend looks great though and would be perfect for the changing season!
Trisha Gilkerson
Diffusers are my favorite way to use essential oils! We have 3 of them 🙂
Amy
I’m excited not only about the nose-type solutions this may provide, but also the RLS that you mentioned! Where do you apply it if you want to treat that?
K. M. Logan
Straight to the legs, it was literally a life saver in my last pregnancy. Thankfully I’m not dealing with it anymore.
Carrie
If using this blend in a diffuser, do we still need the carrier oil?
What size bottle do we need for this blend? (I’m still not familiar enough with converting mL to know how much 4 teaspoons is, lol.) I put the blend minus the carrier into a 1oz bottle and it filled it up nearly 1/4th, so if I need the carrier for diffusing I’ll need a much bigger bottle. 🙂
Thanks so much for posting this. I was desperately trying to find a blend for my sinuses and my hubby’s breathing problems that didn’t contain eucalyptus (I’m allergic, and he hates the smell). Per your notes to a commenter above, I switched out the eucalyptus for lemon oil. Without the carrier oil, I put some into a diffuser and it opened both of our breathing passages up in mere minutes. It still seems VERY strong though, hence my question about the carrier oil. I’m using Edens Garden oils, by the way. This is my first time trying EOs and I’m convinced. No more Tylenol Sinus every few hours!
Trisha Gilkerson
Hi Carrie,
No carrier oil is needed if diffusing. 🙂 I hope this blend helps you out!

I am a huge believer in essential oils. I learned about them after losing a kidney to a tumor. I have become convinced that they are the best remedy for most of what ails you.
Sandra
What is your favorite diffuser? I’ve been looking for one off and on for months but can’t decide – I read Amazon reviews and they are very mixed. I prefer one that looks nice and is subtle (I don’t want colored lights or anything like that). 🙂 Thanks much!
Trisha Gilkerson
My absolute favorite is doTERRA’s AromaLite diffuser (it’s also a nice small one you can take with you on trips). But my favorite budget diffuser is the GreenAirSpa diffuser.
Heather
Just want to join to gratitude! I really like to use essential oils and after reading your post I have more inspiration now! Keep well and thank you!
Trisha Gilkerson
Glad you enjoyed the recipe Heather! 🙂

I have yet to try out Geranium Oil. Looking forward to giving this blend a go 🙂
Hana
Hi can i replace carrier oil from sun flower to coconut oil? Thanks you
Trisha Gilkerson
Yes, you should be able to do that.
Marlyn
This blend got me thru my COVID-19 episode. However, I thought the blend called for 4 tablespoons carrier oil and the dilution looked about right for a 75 yr old. Thank you so much for this recipe. It worked great (despite my over dilution and not adding myrrh to the blend).
