Fever, chills, aches, pains, a sore red breast. You guessed it, these are all classic symptoms of mastitis, a nasty breast infection. If you’re a breastfeeding mama like me, you may have experienced how extraordinarily painful this can be. As if the breast soreness isn’t enough, you probably feel as if you’ve been run over by a train and are running a fever to boot.
After much research and reading I armed myself with a multi-faceted treatment approach should I come down with this nasty infection again.

Interesting, I do something similar, but I also pump/nurse like the dickens, use heat compresses, and rest as much as humanly possible with three little kids. I’ve been known to chase my garlic with Welch’s grape juice – the insanely high sugar not good for you kind – but at least it stays down.

You make a good point…continuing to nurse and/or pump is very important in getting rid of the infection!

Yes, and so many providers try to give you a non-nursing friendly antibiotic if you end up needing one, sabotaging the nursing relationship, by telling you to “temporarily” wean. Educate yourselves providers; there are many safe antiobitcs!!!

So very true! There are very few reasons one would need to temporarily wean. I was told to wait 24 hours after having an MRI with contrast die, only to research myself and find all of the pharmaceutical breastfeeding experts say its fine to breastfeed immediately after since such a miniscule amount passes into the breast milk. Fallacies on breastfeeding abound!
