If you needed to build a house, but you only had one tool to be able to build it, could you choose just one tool that would do the job? Maybe you think the hammer is the most versatile tool, or the screwdriver, or the saw, or whatever. It’s true: these tools are helpful, even necessary at times, but just one tool is inadequate when it comes to building a house.

The same is true with discipline. It’s easy for parents to rely on just one disciplinary tool, like time-outs or spanking or losing privileges—and when we do this, we neglect the other tools available to us. This is a surefire way to wear out a tool.

But an exploration of the Bible shows us that God has given parents all the tools we need. It’s just a matter of knowing what they are and how to use them.
